Try-Out Spins & More

Join Us.

The best way to see if NBCC is right for you is to ride with us. Join us for a couple of Sunday spins, meet the crew, and get a feel for how our group rides work — no pressure, just good cycling.

Try-Out Spins.

You’re welcome to join us for up to two Sunday spins before deciding whether to become a member. For insurance reasons, you must get in touch with us in advance.

Tell us a bit about your typical distance, pace, and any group riding experience, and we’ll help place you in the right group. You can read more about the different groups on our Club Rides page.

At the end of the day, cycling in a group means going further, faster, and safer — or as we like to call it, FFS.

If you’re not currently registered with Cycling Ireland, we’ll arrange temporary insurance cover for your trial spins — as required by our affiliation. We’ll also need your emergency contact details in advance.

To help us plan appropriately, please let us know at least 48 hours in advance — ideally by the Friday before the Sunday spin you wish to join by emailing our club membership officer at naomhbarrogcc@gmail.com.

Frequently asked questions.

You’re probably thinking…
Am I fit enough?
Will I keep up?
How does it all work?

We’ve answered the questions we’re asked most often here.

Am I fit enough to join NBCC?

The simple answer is yes! We welcome riders of all abilities — from relaxed coffee spinners to amateur racers. Our entry-level group, SKY, requires you to comfortably cycle for about 2 hours on a Sunday spin. The pace is 20–22 km/h, but no one gets left behind.

Do I need experience riding in a group?

Nope. Plenty of our members had little or no group riding experience when they joined.
Our entry-level group is a great place to learn how things work in a calm, supportive way.

People will help you out, explain things as you go, and nobody expects you to know everything from day one.

What if I’m slower than everyone else — will I get left behind?

No — that’s not how we ride. Our groups are designed to stay together, and the ride captain keeps an eye on how everyone’s going.

Also, feeling “slow” isn’t always about fitness. Often it’s something simple like gearing, bike setup, or riding position. That comes up all the time, and there’s usually someone happy to offer a tip if it helps make the spin easier.

If you’re having a tough day, just let the captain know. No drama, no judgement.

How do I know which group to ride with?

You don’t need to figure that out on your own — we’ll help you.
When you get in touch about a try-out spin, we’ll ask a few simple questions about your usual pace, distance, and experience, and suggest the most suitable group. If it turns out another group is a better fit, that’s absolutely fine.

Can I move between groups over time?

Yes — and it happens all the time. People move up as fitness improves, move down if they’re tired, coming back from injury,
short on time, or just fancy a more relaxed spin. There’s no pressure to “stay” in a group — ride what suits you on the day.

Can I join if I’m coming back from injury or a break?

Definitely. Lots of our members have joined (or re-joined) after time off the bike.
Starting with an easier group is very normal, and there’s no rush to do more than you’re comfortable with.

The focus is on enjoying the ride and building back gradually.

Is there an age limit?

Yes. Unfortunately, we’re not set up to accept junior members. Otherwise, we welcome members of all ages – age really isn’t the deciding factor.

What matters most is choosing a group that matches your pace and comfort level.
Some of our most regular riders are well into their 60s and still going strong.

Can I try a spin before joining the club?

Yes — and we’d encourage it. We offer up to two Sunday try-out spins so you can see how the club works, meet a few people, and get a feel for the riding before deciding whether to join.

How many try-out spins can I do, and what do I need to do beforehand?

You can take part in up to two try-out spins. We just ask that you get in touch at least 48h beforehand and we will match you with the right group. We’ll ask for a few basic details and an emergency contact — nothing complicated.

Do I need to be a Cycling Ireland member to try a spin?

No —your welcome to take part in two Sunday spins before deciding to join. Once you decide to join the club, you’ll need a Cycling Ireland licence, which provides insurance for club rides and other cycling activities.

How do you keep group rides safe? Do I need to know hand signals and calls?

Safety is important to us, but we keep things straightforward. Rides are led by experienced ride captains, routes are planned in advance, and we ride in a predictable, sensible way.

You don’t need to know all the hand signals or calls before your first spin — you’ll pick them up quickly, and people are always happy to help.

When do club rides take place and what should I expect on a typical spin?

Most of our club rides happen on Sunday mornings, with extra midweek spins during the summer. Pace, distance, and routes vary by group and by season.

Winter rides tend to be shorter and a bit more sensible. In summer, when the evenings are long and the weather behaves itself, some groups go a bit further and explore new routes — sometimes to infinity and beyond.

Every spin has a planned route, a clear pace, and a ride captain. Easier groups usually stop for coffee, and plans may change if the weather isn’t on our side. You’ll always get the details beforehand, so there are no surprises.

Still unsure if NBCC is right for you?

That’s completely normal — most people feel that way before their first spin.

The easiest way to find out is to come along and ride with us. And if you’ve any questions at all, just get in touch — we’re always happy to chat.
